Before reading this, I encourage you to read Fifteen Year Old Bride because without that, your ability to fully appreciate the main character's personal growth and success in Labour And Love will be hindered (in my opinion).Maria Inkey was a mere bud of a female in Fifteen Year Old Bride (part 1 of the trilogy), but in Labour And Love, she's evolved into a woman who's learned hard lessons, so unlike Fifteen Year Old Bride, there's a lot of philosophizing going on here and in that context, it makes sense.
Considering when it was written, I was surprised by the inclusion of a few erotically charged encounters here (deftly described)- sensuality certainly wasn't an underpinning of Fifteen Year Old Bride. Between that and the philosophizing, I was reminded of the writings of Anais Nin. Don't let that confuse you though. There's an erotic undercurrent that presents itself in a few places throughout Labour And Love, and it serves to highlight this woman's open mind and heart. The bulk of Labour And Love really IS about Maria Inkey striving to strike a balance between being a single mother who will work hard to provide for her sons, becoming a successful writer, and having an honest and fulfilling relationship with a man who just happens to be weaker than she is.
Labour And Love is about an honest woman making difficult choices, thinking as clearly as she can in challenging circumstances, and living a life that most women of her era never had to. That said, I look forward to reading Lessons End.

This book provides a fascinating insight into what life was like in Hungary in the 1920's,1930's and beyond. It takes the reader along for a fascinating journey into Budapest showing them what life was like for an individual during this period of European history.
